Pseudonyms

I spent yesterday afternoon signing bookmarks and bookplates for those who pre-ordered Out of Love from Bella Books. It’s an interesting exercise in fine motor applications to sign your name a few hundred times in one sitting. It’s even more interesting if you’re signing someone else’s name.

Several years ago I attended a writer’s convention, just in time to announce the upcoming publication of my first book, Shaken. I was watching my friend Blayne Cooper signing copies of her book, The Last Train Home, and thinking how much fun it would be to finally have a chance to do that. The next thing I knew, this woman — Joyce! — tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was KG MacGregor. I figured I had probably parked in Jane Fletcher’s limo space or something like that, and sheepishly readied myself to go move my car. Instead, she handed me a piece of paper and a Sharpie and asked for my autograph. The paper was a beautifully formatted title page of a short story I had posted on the web. I was so excited to be asked — until I tried to sign my pseudonym for the first time. My brain failed to send the necessary motor signals to my hand. I practically had to print it in block letters. By now, I’ve had more practice, but I confess my autograph is still illegible. Then again, so is my real signature.

I have it on good authority that the website facelift I’ve been mumbling about might actually become reality soon. Actually, I’ve been told to shut up about it — we won’t launch until it’s totally de-bugged —
but I’m very excited and a little out of control.

Last fall, I went to my first Women’s Week in Provincetown. It was exciting to be there in such a festive atmosphere and to meet other Bella authors for the first time. You’ll find our group photo over on the Events Page. One of those authors in attendance was Terri Breneman, who had just published her first book, Anticipation. She’s got another one ready to roll, and I asked her to tell us about it. I’ll be sure to come back later with purchase info when it’s available.

KG was kind enough to invite me to be a Guest Blog on her website. Thank you! Of course I must admit that I continue to giggle at the title. Gee, honey, what are you doing? Why, I’m a Guest Blog! Isn’t that a great visual? I think I should be eating chips.

Anyway, the second book in the Toni Barston Mystery Series is coming out in a couple weeks. It’s called Borderline and here’s the blurb…

Toni Barston returns as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Fairfield. After a truck driver nearly hits her and a bigoted judge throws her case out of court, it’s no secret she’s angry. But when both men are murdered and Toni has no alibi, she goes from attorney to main suspect. To complicate matters, Toni finds herself attracted to the F.B.I. agent investigating the case. Toni’s girlfriend and their friends try to help, but even they have their doubts when another man is killed shortly after Toni expresses her dislike of his behavior.

Borderline

As Toni and her friends desperately try to clear her name, some of the suspects become allies and allies become suspects. Toni will need to dig deep into her past to use all of her skills to solve this case and come out alive.

Hey, that sounds pretty good! But seriously, I really enjoyed writing this one. Each book in the series is a mystery that involves someone with a mental illness. The next one is Compulsion and is currently with my editor. As you may guess, it’s a person who has obsessive compulsive disorder. This series has given me the opportunity to write about things that I’ve done or seen. And no, I haven’t killed anyone and as far as I know, I’m not suffering from a mental illness. At least not too badly. (ha ha) I used to work as a psychotherapist and then for some reason decided to go to law school. Both careers have lots of stories.

That’s enough about me. If anyone wants to talk about Toni Barston or the price of beans, please feel free to e-mail me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I also have a My Space page. The books are available through Bella Books.

Thanks for reading! And thank you KG, for giving me the plug. Hopefully we’ll have another group photo soon.

For an author, few things are more exciting than a book launch. No matter how many books I publish, tearing open that box and getting my first look is always a thrill. And I was definitely thrilled with Out of Love. Great cover by Linda Callaghan! Bella Books is taking pre-orders online, and the first hundred or so who order will receive an autographed keepsake, either a bookmark or a bookplate.  Go to the Out of Love page for ordering information, and to read the synopsis & first chapter. Out of Love will be released on September 17.

Be sure to check back soon. I’ll have a Guest Blog from Terri Breneman, whose book Borderline is due out from Bella Books this month.

And we’re still working on a website facelift. It’s almost ready to roll, but not quite. I hope you enjoy some of the extra features we’ll be adding, such as background on the books, a discussion forum, and short stories.
