6.21 :: Purloined pics from GCLS

Another GCLS con has gone by, this one the best yet. There were many things that made it fun, but I'll start with the obvious -- the friends. There were dozens of writers there, many of whom I've been bumping into at author events since as long ago as 2002. Same with readers, like Rosa Moran & Lynn Glover, folks who have been around for ages. The best, though, were the con virgins, the 30 or so first-timers who felt like they landed in some sort of dream world, surrounded by smiling lesbians who immediately became their new BFFs.

I've learned after years of taking bad photos that it's best to wait until the real photographers upload their pics to Flickr or Facebook and steal them. ;-) These were stolen from Phyllis, Lainie & Margot. First is the proof of friendship, in this photo taken at the awards ceremony on Saturday. All of these folks met at the Bella Authors forum and descended upon Orlando at the urging of others. They represent the UK, Alabama1, the Netherlands, California, Norway, Belgium, Georgia and Alabama2. (Alabama1 & California are in love!)

Next is a shot that was taken immediately after the ceremony, where Blayne Cooper is holding her award for Stranded, I'm holding mine for Worth Every Step (thank you very much!), Cheri Rosenberg came down from the ceiling to pose with her award for Attractions of the Heart, and Susan X Meagher has her "first-ever" award for Outsiders. As you can see, we were quite pleased.

One of the staples of the GCLS con is the author auction, which raises money for scholarships so more writers can make it to the con. This year, as in years past, authors auctioned off the first dance of the night. Thanks to partners Phyllis & Nancy, who bid against each other for the chance to sway with me. Phyllis won, but she made Nancy dance with me:

If you didn't make it to Orlando this year, you *have* to put this on your list for 2011. It's the most fun event of the year, and I promise you'll make friends for life.

5.30 :: Home from NYC

I'm back in Miami long enough to dump the suitcase, do the laundry & repack for Orlando. GCLS starts on Wednesday with the Meet 'n Greet, and I can't wait to see all the familiar faces again. I have a presentation on Thursday called 7 Simple Steps to Writing Real People, and I'm sitting on a panel on book promotions on Saturday afternoon. I also said yes to participating in the Author Auction ... I think it's just for the first dance on Saturday night, but maybe they've upped the ante this year. I probably should have clarified that first.

Massive kudos to this year's Lammy winners -- Spinster's Ink author Rhiannon Argo (Lesbian Debut Fiction), and Bold Strokes authors Jean Redmann (Lesbian Mystery) & Colette Moody (Lesbian Romance). It was a wonderful ceremony, highlighted by the profoundly moving remarks of Pioneer Award winner Larry Kramer, who founded the Gay Men's Health Crisis. Also picking up a Pioneer Award was the always-classy Kate Clinton.

Yes, I love going to the Lammys every year because it's nice to see friends and commune with other writers. But here's the main reason I run up to New York every chance I get. Their names are Sam & Lily and they live in Brooklyn.

Thank you all for the kind notes and comments about my mom after my last blog. I'm sad to tell you she died May 19th, only a few days after that post. It wasn't unexpected, but I honestly wasn't prepared for the enormity of such a loss. Mom came to live with me last year after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and I thought she'd be with us several years. Unfortunately, other illnesses tend to accelerate the disease, and she'd been battling an infection since last fall. It'll take me a while to bounce back, but I hope to be blogging regularly again soon.

5.15 :: Quick update

I apologize for the very long gap since my last update. My mom's rapidly declining health has crushed me since just before Christmas, and it's been hard to concentrate on being KG.

I've received my editor's notes for Mother Load and I hope to have that one ready to go to typesetting in a couple of weeks. If you're a fan of Anna & Lily, I think you'll enjoy it.

Next week I go to New York for the Lambda Literary Awards ceremony. Worth Every Step is shortlisted in the romance category alongside four stellar offerings from fellow Bella authors Karin Kallmaker & Tracey Richardson, and Bolds Strokes authors Carsen Taite & Colette Moody. Can't wait to see everyone.

Immediately from there, we'll be heading to Orlando for the 6th annual conference of the Golden Crown Literary Society. I'm doing a presentation called "Seven Simple Steps to Writing Memorable Characters," or something like that. I'll also be sitting on a panel on book promotions. I hope they don't ask me to talk about the importance of blogging regularly. Small Packages is shortlisted for a Goldie Award in the Dramatic Fiction category; Worth Every Step is shortlisted in Contemporary Romance, and is also a finalist for the Ann Bannon Award. Hooray!

I promise I'll come back and share more about what I'm working on, but I've got to get through these trying times first.
