I snagged her again! Ruth Perkinson is here for her second guest blog, this time to talk about her new release, Breaking Spirit Bridge, now available from Spinsters Ink. As you may recall, I raved about her last book, Piper's Someday, and this book brings us more of Piper's story. Ruth has also agreed to join me at GCLS in Phoenix for a Coffee Chat. More about that on the Events page. Here's Ruthie!
I played a year of Division I basketball in college before a back injury would take me off the court. It killed me because I was good and had a sweet three-point shot from the baseline extended. What do you do when a back injury changes your life? I started to coach and for the next ten years coached at my alma mater and then at the school where I would eventually teach English. Little did I know that those years of coaching (and the short year of playing) would become the backbone of my third novel: Breaking Spirit Bridge.
Breaking Spirit Bridge picks up where my second novel, Piper's Someday, leaves off. Piper Leigh Cliff returns to her roots that are dark and secret as she enters Blue Ridge University for her first year of full-scholarship play. The only reason she comes back to Virginia is because they allow her dog to come with her. The two have formed an inseparable bond and she will not go anywhere without her. The problem is that she comes back to a past she had left - a past riddled with trauma - and she begins to find out that this is not the heaviest burden to carry. It is the mind she was born with. Readers soon find out that Piper must face the biggest battle of her life - the mind she's about to lose.

Okay, it sounds heavy. It is heavy. I think that when difficult experiences shape us, then we must write about them. Breaking Spirit Bridge unveils difficult experiences through the unraveling of the main character. The book's essence treads on volatile waters. This, I hope, will be what readers feel. And, yes, the ending is good...very good.
I no longer have a sweet three-point shot from the baseline extended. But, today, I'm glad to write about women who are strong and who can overcome the most difficult of obstacles. This is so sweet for me.
Thanks, KG! Thanks for letting me blog this week. You rock...
Yes, I know. You can go to www.ruthperkinson.net for more information on Ruth and her books.
