For those who were frustrated by the unresolved sexual tension, you’re probably going to be annoyed to learn that in my first draft, Spencer & Ruth had sex. But the scene lacked the sort of emotion I like to see when lovers first share their bodies, and try as I did, I couldn’t fix it. My editor, Kay Porter, offered up the most ridiculous suggestion – “Maybe you can’t make it work because they shouldn’t be having sex.” The more I thought about it, the less ridiculous her advice became. They had known each other for only a few days, one of them was injured, they were running for their lives…oh, and one of them was presumably straight. Sometimes, you have to be true to your characters, and this was one of those times. I have some ideas for a sequel, one that turns their budding romance into full-blown passion, but I still have a few story hurdles to clear before it can take shape. We’ll see. I floated the idea for a sequel in my blog and didn’t get any response, so maybe I’m the one with the unresolved sexual tension.
