I sometimes carry a digital voice recorder in case I get an idea worth remembering. I’d been thinking about a how-they-met scenario – sometimes a book is born from only one simple element – and I brainstormed the idea of two women hooking up at a convention into my recorder as I was walking through a park. Then I forgot about it. A couple of years later, I found the gadget in the console of my car and plugged in a new battery. Lo and behold, the little story snippet was still there. I adapted the idea from a fling to a full-scale love story, and the characters began to come to life.
