What would you do
for love?

"Ever has it been that love knows
not its own depth until the hour of separation."

When you’re writing about fictional towns, you can make it up as you go. But when your settings are Manhattan and Chicago, you have to get it right all the way down to the gum on the steps, because readers who live there will pin your ears back if you screw up. My partner used to live in Chicago, and she was a big help for the action on that end of the story. I spent time in New York walking neighborhoods, checking out restaurants, and riding the subway, making notes everywhere I went. It doesn’t hurt that I get to the city as often as I can, and I was invited by a friend to visit her tiny, optimized apartment, which I used as a model for Judith’s abode.
