Well before the first draft of this book was finished, publisher Linda Hill approached me and asked if I would like the opportunity to work with Katherine V. Forrest as my editor. My outward reaction was to tell Linda that I had just gotten Cindy Cresap broken in as my editor; my inward reaction was both excitement and apprehension. Who wouldn't want to work with such an accomplished writer and editor-a luminary in the arena of lesbian fiction? Still ... I was intimidated. I needn't have been. It was a joy to work with Katherine and while she probably doesn't realize it, she helped with something that has always been what I considered a weak point in my writing-creating the visual. I've never been one to use flowery prose to paint elaborate images. Part of that is choice, since I'd rather not get in the way of a reader's imagination, particularly with character descriptions. Some readers miss that, though, and Katherine showed me how to drop in subtle cues in ways that don't allow minutiae to take over the story. All in all, a great experience and I'd work with her again at any opportunity. |
