That first kiss...
twenty-five years later

"No, this trick won't work...
How on earth are you ever going to
explain in terms of chemistry
and physics so important a
biological phenomenon as
first love?"

Leland, KY is a fictional town. There are a few anchors in the story to establish the setting as about forty minutes outside Lexington, and not too far from Louisville. Locals might recognize markers that put it somewhere on the hypotenuse of Interstates 64 and 75. My father is from that "neck of the woods" and I lived in Kentucky for about four years as a child, so I felt comfortable writing about the people. That said, there are times when it's best to use fictional settings, and this story was one of them. The town itself plays an important role in the story, with its firmly established traditions and values, all challenges for a prominent local woman who struggles publicly with her sexuality and community expectations. I think there are hundreds of communities like Leland, but I wanted to design the town around my story needs - the ridge dividing the town from the outskirts, the lake and logging trail, the subdivisions and the downtown merchants' area.
