If anyone wants to experience the climb to Mt. Kilimanjaro all they need to do is pick up a copy of Worth Every Step by KG MacGregor. This well-researched and excellent novel is both a romance and travelogue of two women's journey of self-discovery and endurance against the odds. Mary Kate Sasser is determined to get to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, even though her boyfriend Bobby doesn't understand her drive to conquer the mountain. But for Mary Kate this is not just an endurance test but also a chance to break away from her small town and her growing reluctance to marry Bobby. Addison Falk is equally determined to reach the top as a last hurrah before she moves to London to work in her father's investment firm, which will go against her humanitarian ideals. When the women are paired up on the climb they discover an easy friendship as they depend on each other during the emotional and physical journey. But with this friendship they discover a deep attraction that neither can deny and that shakes each of their lives to the core. This extremely detailed story brings the reader on every step of the climb from the cold, physical pain to the exhilaration as they attempt to reach the top. MacGregor, as usual, develops her characters with care and compassion and you care about Mary Kate and Addison as they climb and develop their relationship. This page-turner is the perfect afternoon read. ~ Cecelia Martin for the Lambda Book Report |
